In product development unfortunately there are often reasons why success does not come easy or at all - picture the following - a company is about to commit fully to developing a product that just can't fail. The engineers have the design all figured out - it will work! We know it will solve the problem fully. Once the customers see it in action, it will sell itself. The future is rosy. It had better be - we've got all our hopes on this working.
All sounds great. But think on the following nagging doubts in the back of the Engineering Manager's head:
- Did we actually sit down with customers and capture ALL of their requriements?
- Did our Systems Engineers translate these into System Requirements before we started design?
- How are we going to show that the design meets the requirements?
- It's all designed, now what about maintenance?
And the Sales manager is worrying about:
- Engineering have built a great device here, but how are we going to specify the product to the customers? What IS the offering they need to buy - it's more than just the device?
