Do I need Technology Transition Support?
In product development the pressures of getting a concept out of the door often outweigh the longer term approach. Equally, young companies often can't afford the commitment of dedicated expertise in all subject areas that may be needed in the future - but just are not a problem in the present.
"when this works it will self itself!" - Heard that before? It may well be the best concept on the block but that doesn't guarantee success. Ask yourself the following:
From an engineering perspective?
- Did we capture our customer's requirements - or do we just "know" what they are going to want?
- Did we document any of this and create System Requirements as a result?
- How are we going to demonstrate that the design meets the requirements? Are we hoping that a demonstration of the system will be enough for our customers?
- I can't think about maintenance right now - it's not even built.
Equally valid are questions a Sales Director may have:
- Engineering have developed a great device, but what actually is our proposation to the customer? What is it that we will deliver to meet their needs - it's certainly more than just the device?
- How does it interface to the world around it?
- What training are we going to offer?
- How will it be maintained?
- How are we going to get this accepted?
- How could we reduce the bidding cost - each time we seem to start from scratch or incorporate old material?
- Do our terms of sale cover the installation as well as the device?
- How do we price it? What about installation, support and training?
- How reliable is it?
